“I want to get good at AI…
without becoming
someone I don’t want to be.”
Hey 👋, it’s Rob from Innovating with AI.
Whether I’m with my family, my friends or the students in our flagship AI programs, there’s a new question that’s on everybody’s mind.
It’s not about the next magic prompt, the next version of ChatGPT or the next big IPO. It’s something new, different and deeper — the type of question that I haven’t seen about other tech advancements, even after 20+ years in the industry.
See if you recognize this:
Notice what’s happening here: These are smart, compassionate, forward-thinking people — not AI boosters or anti-tech luddites. They see AI’s potential, and they’re searching for a way to navigate the uncharted ethical waters of this new era.
Over in the AI hype crowd, no one cares — they’re too busy selling “one magic prompt to make 6-figures” and bragging about their follower counts. The luddites fail at the other extreme — adopting an “AI hater” identity and forfeiting their chance to influence the future.
This new question is unique to those of us who are both thoughtful about the world and curious about new technology. The people who want to use tech to make things better — not to enrich ourselves at the expense of others.
People like us are wrestling with a new problem:
How do I get good at AI… without leaving my standards and values behind?
I’ll give you an example from my own life (and my most important job — being the best dad and husband I can).
I was sitting on the couch with my son (12 years old) and showing him how AI image generation works. We thought up some funny stories and made a few wacky images to go along with them, using AI. We laughed, we learned, we had fun. Later, I showed my wife.
Her response, only half joking: “How much water did that cost?” 😧
My heart sank.
I do not want to be the kind of person who’s callous or careless or wasteful — and the resource usage of data centers is a real worry. At the same time, I do want to teach my son to be tech-savvy and prep him for the AI era. I think that’s my responsibility as a dad.
And I know for a fact that it’s not all (or even mostly) bad: AI is being used for genuine, win-win improvements in business, medicine, education and beyond.
At the same time, the questions I hear from my loved ones, my students and my employees — all of whom are in that thoughtful, curious camp — demand concrete and compassionate answers.
Questions like:
Am I putting my hard work and reputation into the right thing?
Can I embrace the good parts of AI without accidentally aligning myself with people who are ruthless, heartless and (correctly) reviled?
And if I do want to learn AI, how can I do it in a way that doesn’t leave me overwhelmed with 1,001 tools and a million articles I don’t have time to read?
With all the negativity spiraling around AI, you’d have to be a little crazy not to worry. The problems are no joke: AI being used to wage war. Data centers bursting at the seams. Thousands laid off as “lower-value” humans. College kids wracked with anxiety about the future.
And that question — “am I part of the problem?” — gets louder and louder.
Nobody in the tech-hustle influencer world has an answer. After decades of endorsing crypto scams, privacy invasion and addictive design, why would they even try?
It’s daunting, but I refuse to simply opt out and yield the future to people who’ve proven they don’t deserve our trust. Instead, I want to be active and knowledgeable so I can play a role in the decisions that shape our future — and I want the curious, responsible and ethical people to be there with me, too.
So my team and I decided to create the place we kept wishing existed.
A place where a thoughtful person can get good at AI without checking their conscience at the door.
Before we get into the details, I want to show you what life looks like once that gut-wrenching question — “am I part of the problem?” — finally has an answer.
Fast-forward 6 months.
Now you’re sitting with your son, daughter, niece or nephew — just like I was — dreaming up something silly with the help of AI, making images and laughing. Only this time, when the tough questions come up, you have real and satisfying answers.
You know the honest tradeoffs. You know which tools are lighter on resources and when the differences matter. And more than that, you’re not just teaching a kid to use AI — you’re teaching them to use it wisely. You’ve become exactly the kind of grown-up the AI era needs.
Now you’re out to dinner with friends.
Someone brings up AI — the layoffs, the data centers, the latest scary headline — and you don’t tense up or quietly change the subject. You can speak to the hard parts with a clear, fair head. You’re not a cheerleader, and you’re not a cynic. You’re the person who’s actually thought this through. And you’ve become the person your friends and family seek out for honest, balanced advice.
It’s a regular Tuesday at work.
A flashy new AI tool is all over the internet and everyone’s panicking about falling behind. You glance at it, and within 30 seconds you can tell whether it matters to you — and then you get on with your day. The information firehose can’t drown you anymore.
You’re getting real work done — a long report, a complex project, a messy bit of planning — in a fraction of the time it used to take. And feeling genuinely good about it. No gimmick. No guilt. You know precisely where your boundaries are, and you’re nowhere near them.
And the best part of all: that voice asking “am I part of the problem?” is finally gone. Not because you ignored it — because you finally answered it. You’re using powerful technology in a way you can stand behind, completely. You’re not part of the problem. You’re one of the thoughtful, careful people making sure it goes right — for yourself, for your community, and for everyone who looks to you to show them the way.
This is what the AI era can look like for anyone curious and conscientious enough to do it right. The only thing you’re missing is a trustworthy place to learn.

Ethical AI
Foundations
The hands-on membership for thoughtful, curious people
to get capable and confident with AI while staying true to your values
so you can build a better future for everyone who counts on you.
The responsible, empowering foundation for life in the AI era
For three years, my team and I have worked alongside more than 2,000 students in our flagship AI programs and 175,000 readers of our AI newsletter. We’ve immersed ourselves in their questions, their wins and their challenges — the overwhelm, the never-enough-time, the hard questions about jobs and ethics, the exhaustion with the hype and the doom. The same worries, again and again, from thoughtful people in every walk of life.
So we built something new to answer those challenges. Ethical AI Foundations is a fresh path to getting good at AI and staying true to yourself, shaped by everything those thousands of people taught us. It’s a learning membership built for every schedule and budget — with live workshops, always-available recordings, and hands-on activities you can apply immediately in real life.
Every moment is designed around an educational and ethical framework we built from the ground up — drawn from years of teaching our students, and from everything we hear at our own dinner tables, from the family and friends we love who are wrestling with all of this too. It’s exactly what AI learning today is missing.
We call this new approach our C.A.R.E. promise — Current, Actionable, Responsible and Empowering — and we use it to shape everything we do.
- Twice-monthly live trainings
- A hands-on activity every time
- Ask-us-anything live Q&A
- Every session recorded
- “State of AI” briefings
- Instructor-reviewed certification
Every lesson is built on our C.A.R.E. promise
Capable and conscientious, every single lesson. C.A.R.E. is how we drive the hype, doom, and noise away.
Current
We drink from the firehose so you don’t have to, then teach the handful of things that actually matter — current, clear, in plain English.
Actionable
Every lesson hands you a practical activity you can use that same day — a real project, not abstract theory you’ll never apply. Doing, not watching.
Responsible
Safety and ethics are the foundation of every session, never an afterthought: what’s safe to share, when to trust AI, when to double-check.
Empowering
You leave thinking “I’ve got this” — capable, not intimidated. No tech background needed: if you can use a browser, you’re ready.
Here’s everything you get in your
Ethical AI Foundations membership
Not a course you cram once and forget — a standing membership that keeps you capable, current, and grounded month after month.
Two live trainings every month
Twice a month, join a practical, workshop-style session taught live in plain English — beginner-friendly, no jargon, no prerequisites. Sessions span a wide range of topics and are always new and immediately actionable, each one built on our C.A.R.E. promise. And every live training ends with its own live Q&A, so you can ask in the moment.
A hands-on activity with every session
Your time is precious — so we don’t bore you with long-winded theory that you’ll never be able to apply to real life. Every training hands you a practical activity that turns into a real project you can implement immediately, to make things better for yourself and the people around you. Confidence comes from doing, not watching.
Ask us anything, live — like office hours, supercharged
Every month, join a rapid-fire, ask-us-anything webinar with your coaches. Post your questions ahead of time, upvote the ones you most want answered, and basically “download our brains” — about a tool, a tricky situation, or whether you’re “doing this right.” No question is too basic, and no one will ever talk down to you or spray acronyms to sound impressive.
Every session recorded — a library that keeps growing
Can’t make it live? Every session is recorded and added to your library, so you never miss out. From the day you join, your collection grows for as long as you’re a member — watch live or catch up anytime.
Long-form “State of AI” briefings
AI changes at light speed, and keeping up alone is exhausting. So we do the reading for you and send a long-form, plain-English briefing — written like a thoughtful investor letter — on what actually changed and what it means. No firehose, no hot takes: just the most important signals extracted from non-stop news cycles of noise.
A community of thoughtful, like-minded people
You’re not the only one in the thoughtful middle — too grounded for the hype, too curious for the blanket rejection. Discussion threads on every lesson and live chat in each webinar mean you’re always learning alongside people who get it. If the people around you tense up or roll their eyes at AI, this is the room where you can finally exhale — and trade ideas, wins, and honest questions with people wrestling with the very same things you are.
The Ethical AI Foundations Certification
Complete any six lessons — doable in about 60 days — and earn a certificate that proves real, applied AI literacy. Post it to LinkedIn, add it to your résumé, then keep it current by continuing to learn, just like professional continuing education.
Seats to share with the people you care about
AI is a life skill you’ll want to share. Family and Team plans give the people around you their own logins, progress, and certificates, so you can guide your kids, loved ones, or team to success in the AI era.
Learn from people on a mission to make AI work for everyone
Plus — an ever-growing cast of IWAI teammates and guest instructors.
Rob is a 20-year tech-industry veteran, software developer, and entrepreneur who started coding at age 12. He founded a million-user cloud-storage startup (acquired in 2009) and is CEO of HDC, a development firm whose software has powered more than 100,000 websites — including work for Harvard, MIT, The World Bank, Marriott, Intel, Facebook, and The Oscars. His work has appeared in Wired, Forbes, Fortune, and TechCrunch.
But Rob’s real mission is teaching. After a successful tech career, he found that helping tens of thousands of people gain comfort and confidence with technology was even more fulfilling than the work that came before it. He built Innovating with AI on a simple belief: that everyone — not just engineers and executives — deserves to thrive as AI reshapes work and life.
Nyasha is an educator and software developer on a mission to make AI and technology accessible for everyone — no gatekeeping, no jargon, no overwhelm. As a LinkedIn Learning instructor, she has created multiple courses and taught more than 50,000 students, and she shares practical, jargon-free guidance through her YouTube channel and “The Hopeful Workspace” podcast. Her creativity and insights have been featured in Time Magazine and The Guardian.
Nyasha believes tech education shouldn’t be reserved for computer-science graduates or gatekeepers — every person should have the tools to understand and use technology for their own goals. That mission is the very heart of Ethical AI Foundations.
“A lot of soul behind the program … real people behind the screen”
Rob’s in the community every day … actively answering questions, celebrating people’s wins, cheering people on … that’s the kind of attention that I think gets lost in a lot of programs.
Current skills. Honest guidance. Real-world wins.
Here’s a sample of the live trainings ahead. No filler, no useless theory — every session is built on all four parts of our C.A.R.E. promise, and every one ends with a hands-on activity you complete at your own pace.
A balanced, clear-eyed look at what’s actually changing in the job market — no doom, no hype.
Put these skills to work for the people, groups, and missions you care about.
Know exactly what to put into an AI tool — and what to keep out.
A look at the real numbers behind AI’s environmental footprint — and the choices you can make to accomplish the same goal with less burn.
Turn AI into a patient, personal tutor for any subject or skill you want to master.
Create what you couldn’t otherwise afford — without replacing real artists or losing your voice.
Draft faster and sharper, while keeping it unmistakably yours.
Let AI handle the messy, multi-step planning.
Practical, grounded guidance for families and classrooms.
Put your best, real self forward in a tough market — without faking anything.
Go from idea to a real, live web page — for a community event, a small business, or a passion project. No code, no jargon.
Turn dreaded forms, bills, and comparisons into a ten-minute task.
New sessions added every month, always recorded — your library grows the whole time you’re a member.
Live sessions generally take place on Thursdays at 1 p.m. ET, with occasional changes to other days of the week. Sessions will always be during business hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) in the Eastern time zone, and each one runs about an hour.
Session topics and dates are subject to change — we’re always improving.
“A positive voice for responsible AI adoption … with that dash of humor and fun”
Run by folks who really have high quality standards … it goes beyond just running some learning programs to wanting to affect positive change in our world … and has a really incredible point of view around that.
Certification

Aug 27 2026Earn the Ethical AI Foundations Certification
Earning your certification means more than watching along. For each of any six lessons, you’ll complete the session and submit the hands-on activity for real instructor review — getting personal feedback that confirms you’re truly on the right path, not just going through the motions.
Finish all six — doable in about 60 days — and you’ll earn the Ethical AI Foundations Certification: proof that you’ve built real, applied AI literacy. Then keep it current by continuing to learn, just like professional continuing education. It’s something that says you’re not just dabbling — you’re staying sharp as the world changes.
Post it straight to your LinkedIn profile, share it with a link, or download it to add to your résumé or portfolio.
“The modern evolution of what school can be … practical use of AI to make life better for people”
This is a real incubator of growth and talent within the AI space … this is not something that is gimmicky or something that is trendy. This feels foundational, logical and practical.
How your membership works, day by day
A month in the life of an Ethical AI Foundations member. Short on time, skeptical of the hype — and learning more than ever.
Your first live training
You log in a little nervous and find a plain-English workshop — no jargon, no acronyms. Forty-five minutes later you’ve got one concrete skill and a surprising thought: that was actually for me.
You put it to work
The session comes with a hands-on activity, so that same afternoon you put it to work on something real — and walk away with hours back and a small “I can’t believe that just worked” grin. A real win, your very first week.
Ask-us-anything
A question’s been nagging you — is it safe to paste this file into one of these tools? You drop it in the monthly AMA, upvote a few others, and walk away having “downloaded the coaches’ brains” on the stuff that actually worries you.
A busy day, but you never miss a thing
The second training lands on a day when life gets in the way, so you catch the recording the next morning with your coffee. Your library’s growing, and you never have to choose between the program and real life.
The State of AI briefing
A scary headline about a new AI tool blows up online. Instead of spiraling, you open the month’s briefing — a calm, plain-English read — and in five minutes you know exactly whether it matters to you. It doesn’t.
The transformation
Between sessions you trade wins and questions in the lesson threads. And when someone gets anxious about AI over dinner, you answer with a calm, fair head — the person who’s actually thought it through. That nagging “am I part of the problem?” voice is quieter than it’s been in months.
“That can-do attitude flows through the whole organization … optimistic about building something that helps better the world”
Rob is accessible, the leadership is accessible to the students … it’s a very organized program. It’s a human-first program.
Why is learning AI so much harder than it needs to be?
You’ve probably tried a few of these already — and left more overwhelmed than when you started. Here’s how our C.A.R.E. promise changes everything.
A few gems, buried in junk and noise
The quality is all over the map — sometimes you strike gold in 60 seconds, sometimes you sit through an hour and the point never arrives. Much of it is out of date, almost none is real step-by-step training, and it’s all buried under ads and upsells. There are gems in there, but you’re digging through a cacophony of junk to find them.
- Current
- Actionable
- Responsible
- Empowering
A sea of content, mostly filler
You’re dropped into a sea of mediocre content, lured by one or two big names that paper over the fact that most of it is slop — with no real way to sort the good from the bad. And when everything’s somehow always 90% off, that permanent fire-sale is a red flag all its own.
- Current
- Actionable
- Responsible
- Empowering
A chef who’ll never critique the meal
OpenAI, Anthropic and the rest make genuinely good free trainings — worth trying. But they exist to get you using more, so it would never serve them to be straight about the tradeoffs and risks. However much lip service they pay to safety, you can’t expect an honest take from the company selling the chatbot.
- Current
- Actionable
- Responsible
- Empowering
All followers, no expertise
Funny how many of these folks were Bitcoin influencers right before they were AI influencers. Now they run Substacks and Beehiivs to sell subscriptions and ads — but scratch the surface and “a lot of followers” is their whole résumé. All hype, no substance, and the moment you peek inside their so-called academies, you’re plainly dealing with an amateur.
- Current
- Actionable
- Responsible
- Empowering
“Real and down-to-earth … I couldn’t relate to the billionaire up on stage trying to sell me something”
What drove me to his program is that he’s gonna teach us … how to use the different AI tools … how to do it ourselves … without trying to upsell us.

A better future — for you, and for everyone who counts on you.
Rob here. 👋
AI is probably the biggest technological shift any of us will live through. But to me, that’s a distant second to the most important thing — building a better world for our loved ones and the people around us.
Getting good at AI isn’t really the goal — it’s simply the method. The goal is to give time back to the people you love, help your family and your community, and do work that genuinely makes life better. The whole reason to learn this is so you can build that better future — without becoming someone you don’t want to be along the way.
You’ve probably already gone looking for a way to do exactly that. Maybe you tried piecing it together from YouTube and ended up with 40 open tabs and no real plan. Maybe you signed up for a giant course library, or followed an “AI guru” who turned out to be yesterday’s crypto guy. All those options will drop you into a sea of content… but none of them really care.
And so, we built compassion and responsibility into every moment of this learning experience. After all, that’s how all of us want to live our lives — so it should be how we teach and learn, too, especially when the stakes are high.
That's what I try to instill in my son — both through my words and, I hope, through my example.
When every step in your learning experience is Current, Actionable, Responsible and Empowering — the four elements of our C.A.R.E. promise — everything changes. You can turn off the information firehose. You can excel at work and in your hobbies and passions. You become the calm, capable one your family and friends come to for a straight answer — and you start using this technology to make the lives around you a little better.
And you won’t be doing any of it alone. There’s a community waiting for you right now — kind, curious, level-headed people who care about the same things you do. People who want to use this stuff to build a better life, for themselves and everyone around them. And there’s room for one more.
Picture yourself three months from now.
One version of you kept waiting — closed the tab, said you’d “figure out AI eventually,” and quietly felt a little further behind each week.
The other version showed up, even imperfectly, and now you’re capable and confident: saving real time, guiding the people you love, and using AI within your own boundaries, in a way you’re proud of.
The next three months are going to pass in the blink of an eye.
So, it’s time to decide if getting good at AI — without checking your conscience at the door — is in your plan.
All I ask is that you make the choice that’s right for you — and because I know that experiencing the membership is the best way to know for sure, I’ve made your first 30 days completely risk-free. Meet your fellow students, go to a session or two, do an activity, see how it feels. If it’s not for you, a full refund is just a few clicks away. No hoops to jump through, and no hard feelings.
If now is your time, I’d be thrilled to see you inside. And if it’s not — that’s completely okay. We’ll be right here when you’re ready. Whether or not you become a member, we treat every single IWAI reader and friend with C.A.R.E.; it’s the backbone of everything we’re building. More than anything, I want you to find the AI learning home that’s truly right for you — and if that’s not us, or just not yet, I’d rather you wait than join before you’re ready.
But if you are ready to begin your Ethical AI Foundations journey, I’d be honored to be there with you. I promise to help you build a better world — for yourself, for the people you love, and for your community — and to help you step into the AI era with the confidence that you’re doing it right.

“You have someone in your corner — there’s a lot of ‘it’s not just me!’ moments”
It’s really insightful. Not just going through the blueprint and the steps, but really understanding the why and the psychology … Rob really makes you feel like he is invested in your success.
